Alex recaps a sloppy weekend of play against the Chicago White Sox. The Red Sox did not play with dignity this weekend, defensively and offensively. Alex says that if that trend continues for this upcoming series against the Rays, then things are going to get really ugly.
Alex also talks about the incredibly fascinating upcoming offseason, and whether the Red Sox can afford another down year in 2011 like they have had in 2010? Are we going to see a rift between Larry Lucchino and Theo Epstein, similar to what we saw in between 2005 and 2006?
The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East race, the AL Cy Young race, and the slipping Padres who have lost 10 straight.

Alex talks about yet another missed opportunity this weekend to make up ground. The reason why the Red Sox lost 2 out of 3 this weekend to the Rays was not because of injuries. The reason why they lost on Saturday was because of poor bullpen management, but the bullpen was managed poorly because Terry Francona doesn't really have many appetizing choices to make. The bullpen has been a hole all year long, and the Front Office has failed to address it. That's a problem.
John Lackey was also a reason why they lost this weekend. He hasn't been able to win games this year. They don't pay him to just "keep the Red Sox competitive." The Red Sox simply don't have the pitching right now to put together a winning streak.
Alex also mentions the upcoming series against the Orioles, the waiver claim of Mike Napoli, and more.
The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East, where both the Yankees and Rays have some holes. He also touches upon Manny going to the White Sox, and Stephen Strasburg's impending Tommy John surgery.

Alex interviews Jon Couture of The New Bedford Standard-Times. Alex and Jon discuss Johnny Damon's decision to not waive his no-trade clause to come to the Red Sox, and also the upcoming series against the Rays.
Alex is back from rainy Nantucket, and lashes into the latest news with the Red Sox, including them taking 2 of 3 from the Mariners. He also gives his opinion on the Damon situation, as he says he applauds Damon for not lifting his no-trade clause. Alex previews the series against the Rays, stating that if the Red Sox don't pick up ground, the season is essentially over.
In the "Around the League" segment, Alex gives a check on the AL East standings. He also gives his take on the upcoming Roger Clemens perjury trail and the reports released by Deadspin about the financial records of several supposedly "small market" baseball teams.
Post on the boards (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards)! It's a big weekend for Red Sox baseball…

Alex talks about the past 2 wins against the Angels, and how the Red Sox absolutely must go on a winning streak here if they want to pick up any ground. They missed their opportunity to pick up ground against the Rays and Yankees the past few weeks, and they can't afford to miss any more opportunities. The winning streak has to start tonight (Thursday) with Josh Beckett on the mound.
On that note, Alex mentions that Dustin Pedroia is back and asks if it's enough. It isn't if Beckett doesn't begin performing.
The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, as Alex cleans up his thoughts on Jacoby Ellsbury. It's not "water under the bridge" with him, not even close.
In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks over the baseball pennant races and the situation with Francisco Rodriguez and the Mets.

Alex talks about the frustrating past few games for the Red Sox, where they lost in which they led on Thursday and Friday. Those are the games that you cannot lose if you're looking to make a playoff rush and gain significant ground. The Red Sox have to go on a run and time is running out.
Josh Beckett came up small once again on Friday and Jonathan Papelbon blew the save on Thursday. Papelbon isn't elite anymore and Beckett is not a top of the rotation pitcher at this point. Alex also looks at the thin Red Sox bullpen and the concerns over the usage of Daniel Bard.
Jacoby Ellsbury is back on the DL, and Alex says that this season will haunt Ellsbury for the entire offseason.
The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex goes over the AL standings, the top division races in baseball, and has a long awaited rant on the putrid New York Mets.

Alex talks about how the Red Sox have once again made this thing interesting, only 3.5 games out of a playoff spot. There are several reasons why this has happened, such as the team's resiliency and the great efforts put forth by Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester. Now it's time for John Lackey and Josh Beckett to step up…
Alex also mentions some good signs from the offense over this series with Toronto, and what the Red Sox must do this weekend against Texas.
In the "Around the League" segment, Alex goes over the AL East standings, as the Rays and Yankees both stumbled a little bit this week. In addition, Alex talks about the "real hate" between the Reds and the Cardinals. Oh yeah, and he gets going on Steven Slater and the overall issues with air travel.

Alex talks about the first 3 games of the big Yankees series over the weekend. Clay Buchholz stepped up on Friday, but unfortunately John Lackey and Josh Beckett didn't on Saturday and Sunday. All eyes look towards Jon Lester to salvage a series split.
Alex also mentions about how with the Rays slumping (lost 5 straight), he still thinks the Red Sox are still in the race. Not by much, and each day that passes without them making up ground makes it seem less possible.
However, it's still possible, which is why Alex is so upset about John Henry's comments that it would take a "miracle" for the Red Sox to reach the postseason.
The "post of the day" is handed out (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards), and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex goes over the AL East standings and talks about the Rays' recent struggles. He also gives a preview of some big series coming up this week in baseball.

Alex recaps a disappointing series (thus far) against the Indians. Alex mentions the problems with Tim Bogar, the concerning recent trend with Jon Lester, and more.
Of course, Alex also spends a lot of time discussing Kevin Youkilis' injury and what it all means. Mike Lowell's return, Jacoby Ellsbury's return, the brawl, and every other news story is touched upon too.
Alex previews the weekend series against the Yankees, which will go a long way in defining where the Red Sox go from here. You can't count them out because of the starting pitching, but hopefully that starting pitching pitches to its ability.
In the "Around the League" segment, Alex checks on the AL East standings and the red hot Rays. Post on the boards (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards)!

Alex talks about the trade deadline, and gives his take on what the Red Sox did (and didn't) do. Alex likes the move to call-up Ryan Kalish, but does not like the fact that the Red Sox didn't improve the bullpen by trading for a veteran reliever.
Alex also recaps the 3 game series against the Tigers, saying that the win on Saturday was by far the biggest win of the season, and made Sunday's walk-off win possible. Alex says that Papelbon's inconsistency is yet another reason as to why the Red Sox need another veteran reliever. Because folks, they're still very much in this race.
The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex goes over the AL standings and give his trade deadline "winners" and "losers."

Alex interviews John Ourand of The Sports Business Journal. Alex and John talk about the declining Red Sox ratings, and what has gone into that.
Alex also recaps the 3 game sweep of the Angels, and the stellar starting pitching the Red Sox have received. Alex says that's been the real key for the Red Sox, and the reason why they "survived" the west coast trip.
Alex says that he thinks the Red Sox are still very much in this race, and begs the Front Office to make a move for a reliever. The bullpen is the clear weakness on this team, and it would be negligent to not address it for a team that's still in the playoff hunt.
The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East standings, and what possible moves may be made before the non-waiver trade deadline this Saturday.
